Siena, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano
If you’re visiting Tuscany for the first time, this is a tour you don’t want to miss. With our specially licensed NCC cars, we can accompany you to areas in the historic center of town that are generally closed to traffic, so that you can enjoy an easy walk and make the most of your time. The tour leaves from your lodgings in the morning and starts with a visit to Siena, the city of the Palio, with its neighborhoods, or “contrade,” its medieval aura, and its iconic shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, the heart of the city.
In the early afternoon we will head towards the ancient medieval village of Monteriggioni with its magical atmosphere, its circular structure, fortified walls, and its 14 stone towers, compared by Dante Alighieri to “Giants” in the Inferno of his Divine Comedy. Monteriggioni is thrilling to visit because it represents the quintessential fort town. It has been witness to many medieval battles, and, in fact, historical reenactments take place there in the month of July. The afternoon concludes with a visit to San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Settled by Etruscans in the third century BC, it is a typical medieval, walled village. San Gimignano and its numerous towers and churches hold works of art of extraordinary beauty. It is also well known for its food, Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG wine, saffron DOP, and excellent extra virgin olive oil.
